In 2026, a basic backyard makeover in Far North Queensland typically costs $5,000 to $16,000, and landscaping a new home from scratch runs $16,000 to $65,000+. Smaller jobs, like new garden beds and a patch of turf, often come in at $2,000 to $5,000. Where your project lands depends on its size, your block, and how well it is built to cope with the wet season.

If you have tried to get a straight answer on landscaping prices, you know the frustration. Most online cost guides are written for Sydney or Melbourne. They don’t account for what makes building a garden in Cairns, Port Douglas or the Tablelands different: monsoonal rain, heavy clay soils, steep blocks, and materials that rot or mould fast in the humidity.

This guide breaks down real 2026 price ranges for the most common home landscaping jobs, explains what pushes costs up in FNQ, and shows you where you can save without paying for it later.

What each type of project costs

Turf and lawns

Natural turf supplied and laid costs about $16 to $43 per m², so an 80 m² backyard lawn typically lands around $2,400. The price climbs if the old lawn needs stripping, the soil needs building up, or the yard needs drainage before anything goes down. In Cairns, choosing a grass bred for tropical heat and humidity matters more than the price per square metre. A cheap turf that dies in its first wet season is the most expensive option.

Synthetic turf runs $54 to $130 per m² installed. It suits shady spots, rentals and small courtyards, but it needs a well-draining base to avoid puddles and smells after heavy rain.

Retaining walls

Retaining walls are priced per square metre of wall face. Expect $160 to $540 per m² for timber sleepers and $270 to $755 per m² for concrete sleepers. A 10 m long, 0.8 m high wall (8 m²) works out at roughly $2,600 in typical-priced timber or $3,900 in concrete.

Timber is cheaper upfront, but treated pine sleepers can rot within years in our wet, termite-prone conditions. Most FNQ homeowners are better off with concrete sleepers or block. Proper drainage behind the wall is non-negotiable: a wall without it can fail after heavy rain.

Paving

Paving costs about $65 to $175 per m² laid, so a 20 m² patio typically comes to around $2,200. Natural stone, large-format pavers, curves and lots of cuts push it to the top of the range. In the tropics, choose a slip-resistant, light-coloured paver. Dark, smooth surfaces get hot and turn slippery with mould in the wet.

Decking

Hardwood decking costs $325 to $650 per m² installed, so a 20 m² deck usually sits between $6,500 and $13,000. Composite decking costs a similar amount upfront but needs almost no maintenance, which is a big plus in our humidity. Raised decks, stairs and balustrades add to the price. Larger structures may need building approval, which adds certifier fees.

Fencing

A standard 1.8 m Colorbond fence typically costs $80 to $175 per metre installed in North Queensland. A 30 m boundary fence usually lands between $3,000 and $5,000. Under Queensland’s dividing fence rules, your neighbour generally shares the cost of a standard boundary fence.

Garden beds and planting

A new garden bed with soil prep, edging, plants and mulch costs $54 to $195 per m². A 20 m² bed typically comes to about $2,200. Mature or feature plants like palms cost more, while smaller tubestock planted closer together keeps costs down.

Landscape design

A garden design or plan costs about $865 to $5,400. For larger projects, a plan usually saves money. It sets the order of works, so you don’t pay to rip out new turf to fix drainage later.

Garden maintenance

Ongoing maintenance is usually charged by the hour, at around $60 to $120 per hour. Green waste removal adds about $130 to $345 per trailer load. Most FNQ gardens need more frequent visits during the wet season, when everything grows fast.

Why landscaping costs more (or less) in Far North Queensland

Two yards the same size can get very different quotes. These are the factors that move the price most in FNQ.

The wet season. Most of our rain falls between December and April. Excavation, retaining walls and paving go faster and cheaper in the dry, roughly May to October. Work scheduled in the wet can face rain delays and muddy, unworkable ground.

Drainage. Many local yards need drainage work before anything else. Agricultural drains, pits or regrading add cost upfront, but skipping them is the number one reason lawns die, pavers sink and walls fail here.

Heavy clay soils. Clay holds water and sets hard in the dry. Beds and lawns often need soil improvement or imported topsoil (around $76 to $160 per m³ delivered) before planting.

Sloping blocks. Hillside suburbs like Redlynch, Bayview Heights, Brinsmead and Freshwater often need retaining walls, steps and engineering. Walls over 1 m high generally need approval and an engineer in Queensland.

Site access. If a bobcat can’t fit down the side of the house, soil and materials are moved by wheelbarrow. That adds labour hours. Machine hire with an operator runs around $97 to $175 per hour.

Cyclone rules. Cairns sits in a cyclone wind region, so decks, pergolas and shade structures must be designed to suit. Some structures that would be exempt elsewhere may need building approval here.

Materials that survive the tropics. Rot-resistant, termite-resistant and UV-stable materials cost more upfront. They pay for themselves by not needing replacement after a few wet seasons.

Getting rid of the old. Removing an old lawn, overgrown garden or failed wall adds labour and green waste or tip fees.

Example budgets for typical FNQ homes

To make the numbers real, here are three common projects priced at typical 2026 rates. Your site conditions will move these up or down.

Small garden refresh (unit, townhouse or rental): about $2,200
Includes a 15 m² new garden bed, 20 m² of fresh mulch, and one load of green waste removed.

Family backyard makeover (flat block): about $8,700
Includes 80 m² of new turf, 20 m² of garden beds, a 20 m² paved patio, drip irrigation for the beds, and two loads of green waste removed.

Full landscape on a sloping block: about $32,700
Includes a garden design, a 12 m² concrete sleeper retaining wall, 100 m² of turf, 30 m² of garden beds, 30 m² of paving, a 20 m² hardwood deck, and multi-zone irrigation.

Drainage, approvals, difficult access and premium materials are the most common reasons a real quote lands above these figures.

How to save on landscaping without cutting corners

  1. Book structural work in the dry season. Walls, paving and excavation scheduled for May to October avoid rain delays and extra labour.
  2. Fix drainage first. It is the cheapest work to do at the start and the most expensive to retrofit under new turf or pavers.
  3. Stage your project. Do the hardscaping (walls, paving, drainage) now and add planting or a deck later as budget allows.
  4. Pick tropical-tough materials once. Concrete sleepers, composite decking and tropical turf varieties cost more upfront but won’t need replacing after a few wet seasons.
  5. Plant smaller. Tubestock and young plants cost a fraction of mature specimens and establish fast in our climate.
  6. Get a plan for bigger jobs. A design stops you paying twice when one stage undoes another.
  7. Check the licence. In Queensland, landscaping work valued at $3,300 or more needs a QBCC-licensed contractor. Cheap, unlicensed work often costs more to fix.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to landscape a backyard in Cairns?

A basic backyard makeover with turf, garden beds and simple paving typically costs $5,400 to $16,200. Sloping blocks, drainage problems and decks push it higher.

How much do landscapers charge per hour in Far North Queensland?

Most charge around $60 to $120 per hour. Larger construction jobs are usually quoted as a fixed price instead.

What is the cheapest way to landscape a yard in FNQ?

New turf, mulched garden beds and tropical plants grown from tubestock give the biggest change for the least money. Leave decks, stone paving and large walls for a later stage.

When is the best time to landscape in Cairns?

The dry season, roughly May to October, is best for construction. Turf and planting often go in late in the dry, so the first storms help them establish.

Do I need council approval for a retaining wall in Queensland?

Generally not if the wall is 1 m or lower, isn’t loaded by a driveway or building, and sits at least 1.5 m from your house. Anything bigger usually needs approval and engineering. Check with Cairns Regional Council or your landscaper before you build.

Is landscaping worth the money?

Yes, when it is built for the climate. Good drainage, durable materials and a lawn that survives the wet make your yard more usable, cut maintenance, and improve street appeal when you sell.
